To hire or not to hire a General Contractor? That is the question

To hire or not to hire a General Contractor. That is the question.

Does hiring a General Contractor (GC) cost you money? The short of it is yes. But the return on investment, both in the cost and value categories, makes hiring one the ultimate win for your home build or renovation.

Consider these wins a good GC brings to the table …

Expertise

When it comes to building or renovating homes, this is what a GC does every day. As it’s their core competency, hiring a GC gains you access to vetted professionals who are subject matter experts with skilled, craftsman-level techniques. This takes trial-and-error out of your homebuilding equation. Likewise, their trades are licensed and insured, and as a team, they understand the bureaucratic red tape affecting your project and have connections with industry experts for any specialty needs your project may demand. The bottom line, if you hire the right build partner, your GC will know, plan for, and address elements of your project which likely never even crossed your mind. Moreover, a good GC will be your advocate for all matters related to your project. For what’s necessary to logic-check design elements, pass code, understand cause-and-effect relationships and how decisions impact cost, and more, a GC is a friend worth having. You’ll find no better friend than SCH in this respect.

Efficiency

Time. Gain it on your project, and it equates to both cost savings and pure convenience. As home building is your GC’s day job, they will have both the knowledge and muscle to pull together a team approach for your construction process. This is especially important if you are considering a renovation project. Understanding the logistical complexities for smart sequencing, and therein, how to stack and layer your project to gain a compressed schedule, together with having the horsepower of long-term trade and vendor relationships, all this translates into leverage for a huge time win for you, even if the schedule needs to be reshuffled due to new ideas or discovered surprises along the way. Time is money. The investment you make into having a GC is your gain. We believe SCH is simply the best in the business at this.

Risk Mitigation

A good GC will not only protect their workers with proper job site safety and methods, but also protect you and what’s yours in the process. Whether it’s protecting the sanctity of your finished home areas from dust and debris to smart material and equipment staging, perpetual cleanup, or by just doing the job right, that’s peace of mind. This is a SCH specialty. Plus, working with a GC gains you a workmanship warranty for work accomplished under their umbrella, and in some cases, even additional product warranty.

Trade & Vendor Discounts

Most GC’s get vendor discounts. The history of the GC’s purchasing and workload volumes leverage this in their favor. SCH willingly passes those discounts along to you and we are happy to do so. Likewise, for the long-term relationships and volume of work a GC has with and provides for their trades, not only does that gain them incredible loyalty and priority, but discount pricing. From here, the winning only continues.

Resale Value

Having a licensed team of professionals on record for the work accomplished on your home, particularly a tier 1 builder, is simply a bonus as a great sell-point to a discerning buyer. SCH as builder is resale gold.

The Fun Factor of Freedom

Hiring a GC allows you to stand back and watch the magic happen. Moreover, it allows you to be engaged, but at a high level, rather than you having to be the boots-on-the-ground problem-solver while fighting your way through a steep learning curve. Having a GC gives you one point of contact – streamlining your communications, the financial management, etc. – allowing you to maintain your personal life without the stress of two full-time jobs. SCH brings you that fun-factor of freedom.

So in a world with HGTV, Pinterest and YouTube, is hiring a General Contractor really worth the cost? A resounding yes. It will be one of the best investments you can make into your home.

ArtPrize Project 1 | VIP Launch Party

For the sixth year in a row, we’ve had the pleasure of partnering with ArtPrize for their VIP party, but this year’s event was to celebrate the launch of their inaugural exhibition, Project 1: Crossed Lines.  The event took place on the beautiful grounds of our Urban Oasis project (a special thanks go out to our AMAZING clients for hosting!) and the evening honored the five commissioned artists and their contribution to this year’s exhibition.  In true ArtPrize form, the evening included exciting entertainment in the form of acrobatics, a rooftop cello serenade and a fire dancer, as well as several artists who crafted their pieces live over the course of the evening.

Many thanks to the extensive planning efforts of the team at ArtPrize and for trusting us a partner for these events all these years.  Thanks also go out to all of the many businesses who contributed time, talent, materials and delicious food to ensure a successful event, year after year.  What an honor it is to be a part of the vibrant, talented, generous and entrepreneurial community of West Michigan!

Room to Renew | Now Accepting Nominations!

Last year, we were honored to get involved with Room to Renew, a non-profit organization led by local interior designer, Deidre Remtema, who uses her professional design skills to redesign one room in a caregiver’s home, giving them a place of rest and relaxation. We are happy to partner this worthy organization again, as Room to Renew is currently accepting nominations for the 2019 recipient (deadline for submissions is Friday, April 26).

“Our mission is to uplift, restore and rejuvenate those who have dedicated their time and energy to taking care of someone with a special need or illness,” Remtema said.

Remtema was inspired to help caregivers based on her own experience as a child. Her mother, a nurse, took full-time care of her grandmother, who had multiple sclerosis, in their home.

The inaugural 2018 Room to Renew recipient was Liz Collar-Baar, a nurse at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s Hospital. She was nominated by her fellow nurses. She cares for her 11-year-old son Tristan. Tristan has congenital heart disease and has endured over 50 surgeries. Liz and her husband work opposite shifts so they can care for Tristan.

After insisting that the room makeover should be for Tristan and not herself, Liz finally conceded and accepted the gift for her own bedroom.

“I wanted to treat Liz’s bedroom remodel just like any Deidre Interiors project. Working with a designer is fun and I wanted Liz to have that experience. Her bedroom is a custom design of the highest quality thanks to our many partners. This room will look great and function for many years to come,” said Remtema.

The renovated room included a more functional walk-in closet making it easier to put laundry away. A makeup station as a special treat for Liz. An updated master bathroom, custom upholstered headboard, window treatments, color and lighting. Many partners came on board to help make the renovation happen. We at Scott Christopher Homes were honored to lead the charge as the builder partner.

“The room means a greater sense of peace and relaxation,” said Collar-Baar, “It brings a sense of calm and organization in my life. As a caregiver, you don’t think about that for yourself but to have 10 minutes of putting clothes away in the new closet is so peaceful and so effortless, it’s wonderful.”

The transition from not only caregiver at work and home but also to the recipient of this gift has been a learning curve for Collar-Baar.

“Every caregiver deserves a few moments to take a few breaths and a timeout. It’s OK to have that space. It’s OK to have peace and quiet and it’s OK to feel that peace,” she says.

If you know a caregiver that could use a place in his or her home to rest and relax complete the short nomination form online HERE.

Client Testimonial | Cakabakery

Happy clients make the world go ’round here at Scott Christopher Homes and we are thrilled that the end result of the renovation work we did at The Cakabakery‘s new location turned out to be not only a beautiful space, but gave our client an enjoyable build process the whole way through.

“When our custom dessert business, Cakabakery, needed a permanent home we searched Grand Rapids for a building that would suit our unique needs. We found such a place but knew upon purchasing the building that a massive renovation would be needed to shape the layout to fit our use. When deciding to hire a construction team we paid critical attention to selecting a company we thought might work hard to meet deadlines, listen to our concerns and deliver a quality outcome. We selected Scott Christopher Homes and we’ve been thrilled at the results. We worked with Jim Stull and he helped us source sub-contractors for the work needed. Jim’s communication with us was professional, effective and structured. I was especially impressed that Jim actively looked for ways to help make the process less stressful. His attention to detail and resourcefulness were an added benefit. While most companies look for additional ways to profit, Jim kept all the trades people on track and challenged them to be inventive and cost effective. This is rare. Not only are we happy to recommend Scott Christopher Homes to friends, family and fellow area business owners, we also look forward to hiring Jim and team again on future projects. Our sincere thanks to all involved.”
